Ivan, a widowed tsar, seeks companionship after his wife's poisoning and the betrayal of his chief warrior, Kurbsky, who defected to the Poles. He appoints Kolychev, now a monk named Philip, as the metropolitan bishop of Moscow, hoping for friendship.
