A recently divorced man, Randy, is struggling financially due to alimony payments. His attorney suggests he find a new husband for his ex-wife, Valerie, to alleviate his financial burden. A weekend party is arranged to pair Valerie with a suitable suitor, Paul Hunter, but things get complicated when a free-loader, Freddie, crashes the party and makes a move on Valerie, who starts to develop feelings for him. Meanwhile, Randy becomes convinced that Freddie is bad news and decides to win Valerie back and remarry her himself, realizing he still has feelings for her.
