Dr. Gillespie is approached by his old friend Emma Hope, headmistress of a prestigious girls school, about her concerns over Roy Todwell, a young man dating one of her students. Todwell's violent outbursts over minor incidents suggest a serious mental illness, which Dr. Gillespie confirms with the help of Dr. Gerniede. Despite his efforts, Todwell's parents downplay the situation, leading to his condition worsening. Todwell eventually sets out to New York with a single goal: to kill Dr. Gillespie.
