The movie tells the story of Renato Vallanzasca, a criminal who rose to power in 1970s Milan, and his group, as well as the broader picture of Italy's recent history. Vallanzasca's gang, made up of childhood friends, drug addicts, and juvenile delinquents, commits a series of crimes, including murder, and lives a life of luxury. However, their outlaw days come to an end with the killing of two policemen, leading to Vallanzasca's arrest and subsequent prison sentence. He spends years in and out of prison, trying to clear up his differences with his sworn enemy, Turatello, and eventually escapes again, but has changed and is no longer the same person.
