A dysfunctional family relocates to a small town after moving into an old house where terrible events took place. However, no one else seems to notice except for Patricia "Pat" Phelps (Courteney Cox), who believes she is either depressed or possessed due to her symptoms matching those of the locals. Patricia was once known as a wild child who rose to fame with a raunchy women's empowerment novel ("lady porn"). Now, 17 years later, she is clean and sober but still unfulfilled. She hasn't written her second book since their divorce, can't remember having sex with her husband Terry (Greg Kinnear), and has trouble bonding with her teenage children Gaynor (Gus Birney) and Jake (Dylan Gage). Patricia had an affair with a handyman who came over to fix the sink while Terry was at work. In their final attempt to save their marriage, Pat and Terry move the family to a large old house in the suburbs that has its own storied past. Everyone has their demons, but Patricia's might be real.
