A wealthy patron of Venice, Cecil Fox, advertises for a personal secretary, but instead hires a struggling actor, William McFly, who suspects the job is a ruse. Fox explains that McFly will be the stage manager of a play in his palazzo, where he and three unwitting women will play out a fake reality. The women, each a former lover of Fox, believe they will inherit his vast estate, but McFly must improvise to keep the charade going.
