In 19th century Smaaland, Sweden, Kristina and Karl-Oskar struggle to make a living on their small, infertile land, facing multiple harvest failures and even the starvation of one of their children. Desperate, they decide to emigrate to the United States, joining a group of farmers and their families led by a banned priest. They sell everything and embark on a long, arduous journey by sailing ship, with some passengers never reaching their destination in the New World.
