In a repressive Afghanistan under Taliban rule, a family of three women must rely on each other to survive after all the men in their family have died in war. The mother, a former nurse, and grandmother make the difficult decision to disguise their preteen daughter as a boy so she can work to support them. The daughter, scared of being discovered and killed, feels powerless as she takes on a new identity, but finds solace in a small act of defiance by planting a lock of her cut hair in a pot. As the girl navigates her new life, only a few people outside her family know her true identity, including a milk vendor and a local boy who recognizes her despite her disguise.
