Michael Shayne, a private detective, is disliked by Pete Rafferty, the local police chief. Rafferty threatens to shut down Shayne's agency just as he's about to be hired by wealthy Eleanor Ramsey, who's being blackmailed. Ramsey's stepchildren and her husband are all after her money, and they conspire to frame Shayne for an insurance robbery. When Ramsey is murdered, Rafferty tries to pin the crime on Shayne, but suspicion points to her brother Buell Renslow. Shayne's secretary, Phyllis Hamilton, decides to investigate to help her boss.
