A single mother, Nellie Romano, raises her son Nick in a tough Chicago neighborhood, where her husband was wrongly executed for killing a police officer. Nellie's friends, a group of down-on-their-luck individuals, help raise Nick, who is an aspiring concert pianist. As Nick faces bullying and street fights, the group's leader, Judge Bruce Sullivan, tries to help Nick escape their troubled neighborhood and pursue his dreams.
