In rural Southern China, a prosperous farmer, Ling Tang, and his family live a peaceful life, unaware of the impending Japanese invasion. His two eldest sons, Lao Ta Tan and Lao Er Tan, are married and diligent, while his youngest son, Lao San Tan, is a free spirit. Er's wife, Jade, defies convention by desiring to read books, a rare pursuit for women in 1930s China. The family is torn apart when the invasion reaches their village, with the sons joining the resistance and Wu Lien, Tang's son-in-law, surviving by collaborating with the enemy.
