Janet Brooks, a school teacher, becomes embroiled in a scandal while spending the weekend at her fiancé's mountain cabin. She helps a wounded racketeer, Joe Bruno, and unknowingly hides $80,000 in cash. After Bruno's death, he leaves the money to Janet in his will, but she is ostracized by the town and accused of having an affair with Bruno. As the mob searches for the money, Janet's brother, Fred, finds it but is forced to hide it again after being pressured by a local racketeer.
