In 18th century France, Louis de Bourguignon leaves his life of crime with the Malichot gang due to their unscrupulous methods. He forms his own group, operating under the alias Cartouche, and carries out daring robberies of the wealthy, redistributing the spoils to the poor. As Cartouche, he gains the admiration of the people, the love of Venus, and the ire of the police and Malichot. Despite evading their traps, Cartouche ultimately falls prey to the snares of love. He is ultimately saved by a woman, who pays the ultimate price for his rescue.
