After the Civil War, many freed slaves head West in search of a better life. Buck, a former slave and Union Army sergeant, becomes a wagon master for freed slaves, leading them across the country. However, a group of white outlaws, hired by Southern plantation owners, try to stop them, attacking and robbing the wagon trains. Buck and a preacher, who is forced to join the wagon train, decide to take revenge on the outlaws and retrieve the stolen money, despite being outnumbered.
