German sergeant Rolf Steiner is sent on leave to Paris in 1944, after hitting an officer on the Russian Front. He reunites with his unit, now transferred from Russia, and is surprised to find his old commander, Major Von Stransky, in charge. The two have a contentious relationship. Meanwhile, General Hofmann, who is part of a conspiracy to kill Hitler, seeks to surrender to the Americans, and asks Steiner to negotiate the surrender if Hitler is eliminated.
