In the 1872 Lincoln County, New Mexico, gun law reigns supreme. Sam Daly and Pete Morgan plan to become sheriff and then disappear, eliminating local ranchers like the Bennett brothers. Billy Bonney, Fuzzy Jones, and Jeff Travis, friends of the Bennetts, engage in a gun battle with the killers, rescuing Judge Fitzgerald and his daughter Molly. When Billy is branded an outlaw, he retaliates by holding up a pack train and big rewards are offered for his capture. Morgan and Daly use Molly and her sweetheart Dave Hendricks to lure Billy into a trap, but Billy is wary and refuses their pardon offer, instead riding off with Fuzzy and Jeff into the unknown.
