In the 1840s, a New York bank's plan to build a railroad across Mexico sparks a chain reaction of evictions and financial ruin for small farmers in Santa Rita, Durango. Two women, María and Sara, are caught in the crossfire: María, a tough and uneducated farmer's daughter, and Sara, the educated daughter of a bank owner.
