Prince Peter Karagin, a Cossack army officer, falls in love with Lydia Marakova after a chance encounter at the Balalaika cafe in St. Petersburg. He uses his influence to help her pursue a career at the opera house, unaware that she and her family are involved in a revolutionary movement. Their relationship is put to the test when the Cossacks violently disperse a rally, resulting in the death of Lydia's brother. She discovers a plot to assassinate Peter and his uncle, General Karagin, at the opera house, and tries to warn Peter, but ultimately, General Karagin decides to attend the performance, putting their lives at risk.
