Lady Edwina Esketh travels to India with her husband to purchase horses, where she reunites with her old friend Tom Ransome, a charming but troubled artist. She meets the serious and hardworking Major Rama Safti, a local doctor, but he's initially resistant to her flirtations. Their lives are turned upside down when a dam failure brings devastating floods and disease to the area.
