Emily Boynton, the stepmother of three children, blackmails her family lawyer into destroying her late husband's second will, which would have freed the children from her influence. She takes the family on a trip to Europe and the Holy Land, where she is followed by a woman friend of Hercule Poirot, Dr. Sarah King, who falls in love with Raymond Boynton, much to Emily's disapproval. When Emily is found dead, poisoned at an archaeological dig, Poirot investigates the murder.
