In 18th-century Minas Gerais, Portugal's diamond and gold mining operations were marked by corruption and exploitation. João Fernandes de Oliveira, a ruthless and greedy contractor, arrives with a royal mandate to control the diamond mines, but his excesses soon attract unwanted attention from the authorities. Meanwhile, Xica, a charismatic and alluring slave, uses her irresistible charm and skills to manipulate those around her, including João, who becomes enthralled by her presence. As the situation spirals out of control, a government inspector is sent to investigate João's activities, and Xica finds refuge with José, a radical thinker who sees her as a symbol of Brazil's true spirit.
