The Staircase Murders background

The Staircase Murders

The 911 call reporting a wife's accident sets off a chain of events that leads to the husband, a successful novelist and aspiring politician, becoming the prime suspect in her alleged murder.

A successful novelist and aspiring politician, Michael Peterson, finds his wife Kathleen's body on the staircase with signs of a violent struggle. Despite his son's claim that his parents were deeply in love and would never harm each other, the police are skeptical of his account. The investigation reveals that Kathleen's blood was found at an unusual height, and the coroner concludes that she died from multiple blows, contradicting the theory that she fell from the stairs. As the case unfolds, Michael's past comes under scrutiny, including his claim to have been awarded two Purple Hearts, which is disputed by the military. The prosecution also uncovers Michael's bisexuality and his relationships with men, which is used to question his alibi. Meanwhile, Kathleen's sister and other family members side with Michael, who claims that Kathleen knew and understood his lifestyle. The case ultimately goes to trial, with the defense focusing on forensic evidence and the lack of a murder weapon.
