In 8th-century China, the Emperor mourns the loss of his wife, and the Yang family seeks to provide him with a new consort to increase their influence at court. General An Lushan discovers a relative working in the kitchen, who is groomed to become the Emperor's new wife, Princess Yang Kwei-fei. As the Yangs gain power, An Lushan is denied the position he desires, leading him to join forces with the people in a revolt against the Yangs, fueled by their abuse of power.
