In 1980, Frank Lehmann is drafted into the West German army after failing to register as a conscientious objector. He moves in with a group of hippies in his hometown of Bremen, where his outspoken nature and naivety often get him into trouble. Despite this, he shows bravery when standing up for a soldier who is considering desertion, and is appointed as the unit's spokesman. However, back in Bremen, Frank is criticized by pacifists who believe he volunteered for military service. The situation is further complicated by the construction of the Berlin Wall, which changes the political landscape and raises tensions in the country.
