Marcel De Lange, a struggling sculptor, is devastated by the harsh criticism of his work by New York art critics. After a particularly scathing review by critic F. Holmes Harmon, De Lange contemplates suicide, but instead finds the half-drowned body of the notorious serial killer, the Creeper. The artist takes the Creeper to his studio, where they form an unlikely friendship. De Lange tasks the Creeper with murdering the critics who have wronged him, but when a successful artist is wrongly accused of the crimes, his girlfriend, a critic, begins to investigate De Lange's suspicious behavior.
