In the pre-war era, a talented young performer named Ernie Wiseman is discovered by influential impresario Jack Hylton. Meanwhile, a pushy stage mother named Sadie Bartholomew drags her reluctant son Eric, an eccentric dancer, to numerous auditions until he too becomes a client of Hylton. Despite initial animosity, the boys form a successful double act as Morecambe and Wise, but their attempt to transition to television fails due to forced script changes. The duo splits up, only to reform years later on their own terms, becoming one of the most beloved television pairings of all time.
