In 11th century Spain, a divided land is ruled by Christian kingdoms and Moorish strongholds. A young noble knight, Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, also known as El Cid, fights for his country's peace and freedom from invaders. Despite his bravery and resourcefulness, he faces treason charges and ultimately marries his fiancée, Jimena, after her father's death. The couple's marriage is not consummated, and Jimena enters a convent. El Cid becomes a revered warrior, but refuses to aid his king, Alfonso, and instead lays siege to Valencia, catapulting food to its starving garrison. When the Valencians kill their evil ruler, they offer the crown to El Cid, who sends it to Alfonso. However, El Cid is wounded and prepares a final bid to drive the Moors from Spain.
