Jim Carter seizes control of the McWade's carnival concession, transforming it into a success by showcasing scenes from Dante's "Inferno" and marrying Betty. However, his prosperity is short-lived as an inspector deems the amusement pier unsafe, prompting Carter to bribe him. The pier's subsequent collapse leads to the inspector's suicide, Pop McWade's injury, and Carter's trial, ultimately causing Betty to abandon him.
