Quentin Crisp, a flamboyant and charismatic individual, moves to New York City after the success of his TV biography. He falls in love with the city's liberal atmosphere and becomes a "resident alien", writing movie reviews and sharing his wisdom. Despite being aware of the AIDS epidemic, he minimizes its significance, which sparks outrage from the gay community. However, he later gains popularity by helping a young, AIDS-afflicted artist achieve fame, and his cynicism is marketed by a performance artist. Despite poor health, Quentin gives a final performance at a gay club in Tampa, and passes away at the age of 91.
