In the 1850s, James Adams, a farmer, is wrongly accused of a crime and flees to the mountains, where he befriends a grizzly bear cub and forms a special bond with the local wildlife. He settles in the wilderness with only a few human acquaintances, including Mad Jack and Nakoma, and dedicates himself to protecting the region's creatures from harm.
