In a four-part BBC television series hosted by British comedian and travel presenter Michael Palin, which aired in 2002, Palin explored the Sahara Desert regions of Northern and Western Africa across four episodes: "1° Line in the Sand" - traveling from Gibraltar (a British crown colony sandwiched between Spain) to Morocco, Western Sahara, and Mauritania; "2° Destination Timbuktu" - traversing Senegal and Mali; "3° Absolute Desert" - covering Mali and Niger; and "4° Dire Straits" - journeying through Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, and Ceuta (a Spanish enclave in Morocco).
