One night, 14-year-old Madoka Kaname has a nightmare about a devastated city and a girl fighting a losing battle against a dreadful being. The next day, the girl from her dream, Homura, arrives at school as a transfer student, warning Madoka to stay the same. Later, Madoka and her friend Sayaka encounter a magical creature, Kyubey, who reveals that magical girls are real and can be chosen. They must sign a contract with Kyubey and fight witches, abstract beings that spread despair, to grant their wishes. However, there may be more to becoming a magical girl than Madoka and Sayaka realize.
