Siblings Eli and Nellie Pledge inherit their family's pickle business, Pledge's Purer Pickles, in Colne, Lancashire, after their father's passing. They are aided by loyal employees Stan Hardman, Bert Taylor, and Grenville, and rely on Storm the cart horse for transportation. Their second cousin Lily and her husband Walter frequently visit the family. While Nellie focuses on keeping the business thriving, Eli spends his time enjoying leisure activities such as drinking, smoking, and socializing with young women.
