The series begins with Lisey Landon still reeling from the loss of her husband, internationally acclaimed author Scott Landon, who passed away two years prior. She is now in shock and irritated by university professor Dashmiel's incessant requests for access to her late husband's papers and documents. Her sister Darla has also failed to help with Amanda's care. Lisey retreats from the present day through memories of their past relationship, creating a parallel narrative that builds "Lisey's Story."
