The rulers of the Light Universe transfer their essence to their successors upon death, while their conscious brains are stored in a vault. The powerful mobile weapon, Lexx, can only be controlled by the holder of the hand-key. The previous ruler destroyed the Brunen-G race, except for Kai, who was kept in suspended animation and used as an assassin. Meanwhile, Stanley Tweedle, a lowly clerk, is branded a criminal after missing an appointment. In the dungeons, Zev is being transformed into a love-slave. Thodin, a terrorist, escapes and causes chaos, leading to Tweedle's accidental theft of Lexx and the hand-key. Zev escapes with her new body, and Kai is released to combat the terrorists. The group, including a lovesick robot head and the stolen tyrants' brains, flee in Lexx, seeking to destroy tyrant planets and find a home in the Dark Universe, while searching for proto-blood to keep Kai alive.
