The story follows Maxi Amberville's quest to save her father's magazine empire from her uncle, Cutter, who has taken charge after her father's death. After discovering that Cutter plans to close several unprofitable magazines, Maxi threatens to expose his secrets unless he allows her to take charge of one of the magazines and turn it around. The story also explores the complicated family dynamics between Zachary, Cutter, and their wives, as well as Zachary's rise to success and his relationships with his children, particularly Maxi.
