Gormenghast, an ancient city-state, is a crumbling castle with a rigidly feudal structure. The story begins with the birth of Titus, son of the 76th Earl Sepulchrave Groan and Countess Gertrude. The mismatched couple has a teenage daughter, Fuchsia, who initially resents her new brother but later loves him dearly. Meanwhile, a young kitchen apprentice, Steerpike, takes advantage of an altercation to escape and befriends Fuchsia, becoming apprenticed to the castle physician, Dr. Prunesquallor.
