High school friends Kei Kurono and Kato Masaru reunite by chance on a subway train, where they attempt to rescue a homeless man on the tracks. However, their heroic act is cut short when they are struck by an oncoming train. Or so it seems. Instead, they find themselves trapped in a mysterious apartment with others who have also cheated death, along with a strange black orb called Gantz. To survive, they must follow Gantz's rules and embark on perilous missions to eliminate alien threats. But what are these extraterrestrial foes, and what is the true nature of their existence - alive or dead?
