A rocket carrying four individuals - Reed Richards, a scientific genius, his friend Ben Grimm, Sue Richards, and her brother Johnny Storm - is hit by cosmic rays while orbiting the Earth. The radiation grants them extraordinary abilities: Reed can stretch his limbs, Johnny can ignite his body, Sue can turn invisible, and Ben is transformed into a rock-like being with superhuman strength.
