Based on Belva Plain's novel spanning 1909-1959, the story begins with Polish-Jewish immigrant Anna (Lesley Ann Warren) arriving in New York's Lower East Side as a humble seamstress. Initially employed at a modest job, Anna is unexpectedly taken by Joseph Friedman (Armand Assante),who later becomes wealthy and resides in Westchester County. Despite her aspirations towards Paul Lerner (Ian McShane),the son of the Fifth Avenue family that employs her relatives, Anna's heart belongs to Paul. In 1918, Anna gives birth to Paul's daughter, leading Joseph to believe he is the father. The secret surrounding this child will spark a series of events filled with both joy and sorrow over the years. In 1947, decades later, Anna's grandson Eric hopes to find himself in Israel but unexpectedly finds more than he bargained for.
