The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is one of the largest police forces globally. However, when an elected sheriff passes away, a peculiar rule in the county charter from the Wild West suddenly makes Bill Hollister, a fifth-generation lawman, take on the job unexpectedly. Born and raised to uphold justice, Bill wears a white hat and takes on the challenges head-on. Despite political maneuverings, he leads a highly skilled team at LA County General Hospital. Bill's deputy teams include Cade Ward, a former Marine who is one of his few confidantes; Brianna Bishop, the sarcastic driver in charge of security detail; and Joseph Harris, son of Bill's fallen partner. The job comes with its own set of risks, often leading them to LA County General Hospital where they sometimes clash with Dr. Paula Reyes, the chief trauma surgeon married to Bill. Despite initially not wanting the job, Bill quickly learns that doing what is expected isn't always the same as doing what is right. His dogged pursuit of justice becomes his only true skill in this demanding role.
