When an Edinburgh schoolgirl is abducted by DI Ray Lennox, who has a traumatic past, he strongly identifies with the victim. He believes the murderer is serial killer Mister Confectioner. However, his bosses think Confectioner is in prison. Lennox's insistence that they have the wrong man puts him at odds not only with his bosses but also under Confectioner's radar. Thus, the detective finds himself engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with the murderer.
