Young Judith Dunbar, a quiet and gentle-voiced teenager, is sent to boarding school in the 1930s due to her colonial parents. After her aunt's death, Judith is taken in by her best friend Loveday Carey-Lewis's family and falls in love with their home, Nancherrow, and Loveday's older brother Edward.
