Twelve contestants, both men and women, were chosen from America for their talent, competing on a "Star Search" clone show where they perform any song they like. The judges, Abdul, Jackson, and Cowell, evaluate the songs each contestant chooses to sing. After each performance, voters can cast their votes using AT&T (now Cingular Wireless) cellular phones or other devices. Based on the number of votes received, the top three performers advance, while the remaining contestants are eliminated until a winner is crowned as "American Idol." The overall winner receives up to $1 million in recording contracts, and runner-up spots also come with compensation.
