The world ran out of petroleum in the 1970s, but governments kept this hidden using breakthrough technology that converts video game actions into real electricity. Glitches in games have led many players to quit, causing energy shortages like New York's blackout in 1977 and India's blackouts in 2012. The series follows a CIA "glitch fix" team of four gamers who travel through various videogames to fix glitches that threaten the world's power supply.
