A young teen named Chris Carlyle is forced to move from his rural farm to the city with his family, but he's devastated to leave behind his beloved mountain lion, Sunshine, who he raised from birth. Chris tries to hide Sunshine in the city, but ultimately decides to send him to the local zoo, where he's cared for by Dr. Hartwood, Isobel Moon, and Branch Hawksbill. Chris visits Sunshine frequently, but is frustrated that he can't take him out of his enclosure. As he sees the poor conditions the animals are living in, Chris begins to contemplate breaking Sunshine out, and eventually considers freeing all the animals from the zoo, unaware of the consequences of his actions.

A mischievous child's act of kindness towards the zoo animals sets off a chain reaction, unleashing a wild adventure as the freed creatures wreak havoc on the unsuspecting town.
