Twelve-year-old Bobby Graham, an orphan since 1976, relocates to Eagle Rock to live with his aunt and uncle. Driven by his late father's creative legacy, Bobby disobeys his uncle and partners with the town recluse, Vietnam War veteran Jim Klecan, to build a soap box racing car and participate in the derby.
