Jim Rayborn has been doing most of the work on his father's farm, trying to convince him to switch from cattle to sheep, which would thrive in the warmer climate. His sister Lisa returns for their mother's funeral, but Jim soon discovers that her fashion career in New York was a fabrication. Lisa forces their father to adopt a sheepdog, which Jim initially opposes due to the cost. However, the dog, Lucky, proves to be a talented and valuable addition to the farm. When a storm sparks a forest fire, Lucky becomes a hero, temporarily saving the farm and its inhabitants. As the truth about everyone's past and present begins to surface, Jim's life is turned upside down.
