Two high school sophomores, Tom and Ed, decide to leave their homes to find work after their fathers lose their jobs during the Great Depression. They join a group of other homeless kids and travel across the Midwest, camping in unconventional places like 'Sewer City' until they're forced to move on. Eventually, they make their way to New York, hoping to find better opportunities.
