In the French countryside during WWII, a bitter rivalry between neighboring villages Longeverne and Velran escalates into a unique conflict: a "War of the Buttons" where prisoners are forced to return home nearly naked, with the village collecting the most buttons declared the winner. Amidst this childish chaos, the children witness the devastating effects of the adult war, including the Nazis' brutal treatment of families. When a young Jewish girl is threatened, the children must put aside their differences to protect her.
